Since 2012, ACT for Women and Girls partners with Family Services of Tulare County, Soroptimist, American Association of University Women, and the League of Women Voters to raise awareness about violence against women through a global event, One Billion Rising. Program participants of ACT and Family Services team up with allies to gather in downtown Visalia to march the streets on Valentine’s Day each year, while handing out 500 red and pink carnations to passersby with statistics and resource information attached. Drummers and a DJ fill Garden Street Plaza with music as program participants celebrate the end of the march with a flash mob and invite the attendees to dance alongside them. This event aims to rally the community to join the worldwide movement to end violence against nearly 1 billion women a year, or 1 in 3 women internationally.
